Support Our Work
For nearly 40 years, the HCLF has been transforming the landscape of HCL treatment. We are driven by a community of patients, board members, staff, and dedicated volunteers, many of whom have personal ties to this rare disease.
With your contribution, we can ensure that every person diagnosed with HCL receives access to comprehensive, evidence-based information and a supportive community, and we can continue to advance research that will improve treatments further and save lives. Read our 2023 Progress Report. >>
The Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity and all contributions are tax deductible in the United States to the extent allowed by law. Please consult your financial advisor for more information. Our federal tax ID number is 36-3327001.

Appreciated assets are investments or properties that have increased in value since you purchased them. This includes stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Donating appreciated assets offers a twofold benefit: you can support the Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation (HCLF) while potentially reducing your tax burden.
When you donate appreciated assets, you can typically deduct the fair market value from your taxes, potentially saving you more than if you sold the asset and donated the cash. Additionally, by donating the asset directly, you avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciated value. You will need to determine the fair market value of the asset accurately to claim the deduction correctly. Overall, donating appreciated assets can be a tax-efficient and philanthropic strategy for wealth management.
When donating appreciated assets to avoid capital gains, it's important to note the limits. For appreciated assets such as stocks, the deduction limit is typically 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). However, if the donation exceeds these limits, you can carry forward the excess deduction for up to five years. It's crucial to consult with a tax professional or financial advisor to understand the specific rules and limits applicable to your situation.

Starting at age 73, the IRS mandates that individuals take annual withdrawals, known as Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), from IRA accounts. RMDs may push you into a higher tax bracket, which can negatively impact Social Security payments and Medicare premiums.
If you want to give a gift to the Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation (HCLF), you can use a strategy known as the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). To do a QCD, you instruct your IRA custodian to make a check payable to HCLF or send an electronic transfer to HCLF. Many donors find that a QCD is more tax-beneficial than making cash donations. A QCD is non-taxable and does not count toward the maximum charitable deduction amounts.
There is a limit to how much you can donate through a QCD. For the tax year 2025, it is $108,000 per person.
Next step: Consult with your tax or financial professional.

When you include a gift to the Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation (HCLF) in your will or trust, it allows you to extend your support to the HCLF far into the future and adjust your plans if your needs or circumstances change.
Donations through your will or trust may be flexible. Gifting through your will or trust allows you to choose a specific amount or asset, such as a stock, bond, mutual fund, or other security.
You may have your spouse or another loved one named as the primary beneficiary for certain assets. However, since you may outlive them, consider naming the HCLF as the contingent beneficiary.
Naming the HCLF in your will or trust may provide your estate certain tax benefits.
Considerations for charitable bequests: Most people do not have any estate planning completed. If you want to make a charitable bequest, it is important that your wishes are well known and written properly into a basic will or trust. Being clear in your planning, you are ensuring the HCLF will benefit. Your clear instructions will also make the lives of those you leave behind easier.
Next step: Meet with your estate planning attorney and discuss your wishes.

Giving the gift of your life insurance can be one of the easiest ways to donate to the Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation (HCLF). It involves very little effort or paperwork and allows you to change your mind at any time. All you need to do is update the beneficiary designation on your life insurance policy.
You can name the HCLF in several ways:
Partial beneficiary
Full beneficiary
Contingent beneficiary
Often life insurance is purchased to protect our loved ones while we are working and building up assets for retirement. For some, once we reach our retirement years, our life insurance is not needed in terms of protecting our family anymore. In these instances, changing the beneficiary to a charitable organization, like the HCLF, can allow you to make a significant donation.
Next step: Update the beneficiary in your life insurance policy.
